Art vs. Craft

Image
Well my first craft fair of the season was a great success! This year Art vs. Craft was held at the Harley Museum and it turned out to be a great venue. There were lines of people waiting to get in for several hours (the first photo shows people waiting for the 10AM opening)! Thanks to all of the vendors and Faythe Levine who made this special event possible!

Walk in the Woods

Image
Today I sneaked away from the duties of Brew City Botanicals to take a walk down by the Milwaukee River. It is unseasonably warm today, almost reaching 80 degrees. What I found were wonderful hues of fall, busy squirrels & birds, and a lot of mushrooms. Enjoy!

Cold Weather Veggies

Image
My cold weather veggies are really taking off! I planted them shortly after Labor Day and they have been doing well. I have lettuce greens, parsley, baby bok choy, snap peas, spinach, and radishes. Also pictured are potted calendulas (which I hope bloom before the season is over) and a fig tree.

Hanging out with Tig

Image
Today I am hanging out with my best cat friend, Tig. She is my lovely 21 yr. old cat who likes to help me work on Brew City Botanicals. While I put samples together for my upcoming demo at Whole Foods Market this weekend, she keeps me motivated by sitting near me, poised as a statue. She would like to do more, I am sure. However I explain to her that there is no cat hair allowed in the samples.

St. John's Wort

Image
This is a lovely photo that was slightly altered to show the beautiful red tint that St. John's Wort exudes. The constituent that is responsible for this color is called hypericin. Hypericin is extremely helpful in soothing various skin trauma and irritation. I use this oil as a base in my Burn & Wound Care salve. It is great for healing scars, burns, scabs, and most skin afflictions.

Lemon Verbena

Image
I love the scent of lemon verbena. Such a light, lemony, and refreshing scent. It is one of those lovely herbs that just smells like summer. I am currently formulating a nice perfume spritzer that will feature this scent. It is difficult though because there isn't a true lemon verbena essential oil to help create it, only synthetic scents (and that will not do!). That's OK because I have other ideas. I love the creative process in making things!

Solar Infused Oils

Image
These are infused oils that are the "meat" of my medicinal salves. The herbs are placed in jars, covered with extra virgin olive oil, and then set in the sun for about 2 weeks. The heat from the sun extracts the beneficial components of the herbs and they are then fixed in the oil. The pictured oils from left to right are comfrey, St. John's wort, jewelweed, and marshmallow.

Garden Photos

Image
Between making salves and getting an order for Whole Foods together, I had some time to go out and check on the status of my garden. Enjoy!

I'm famous :)

Image
Check out my editorial in Select Magazine! I had the opportunity to write an article for Select Magazine in regards to body care products and Brew City Botanicals. My boyfriend's sister, Kim (thanks Kim!), really refined the content and helped shape things for me! Enjoy!

Lotion-Making Weather

They are calling for rain and cold temperatures tomorrow. Not that I am a big fan of this type of weather, but it is perfect for making products like lotion. Tomorrow I will be making a few batches of my shea butter & orange blossom lotion!

Young Herbs

Image
Today I went into the backyard and checked on the status of the garden. With our unusually warm March and cool April, I was hoping that the new growth wasn't damaged. Everything seems to be coming along slowly, but at least coming along. The St. John's Wort and Comfrey are doing well. The garden also has Tig's approval.

Early Spring

Image
I am loving this unusually warm weather! The spring flowers are coming alive in the yard and I already have a crop of oyster mushrooms! Amazing!

Select Magazine

Brew City Botanicals was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to write an editorial for Select Magazine (http://selectmag.net/). The editorial will feature small companies that create handmade, high quality body care products. It also speaks of high ethical standards such as fair trade and cruelty-free (no animal testing) as a backbone to mission statements of various companies. Brew City Botanicals is an excellent example of a small business that provides all of the above. The editorial will appear in the May-June issue.

Fun in the Sun

Image
It has been a relatively mild winter here in Wisconsin. Today it almost hit 50 degrees. Some of the spring flora is starting to peek up through the soil. I found spring bulbs, like muscari and daffodils, just coming up. Oregano and yarrow were also pretty established.

Snowbells

Image
I found these lovely snowbells (Leucojum aestivum) in the backyard today. They are up a month earlier than in 2011. Snowbells always remind that the days are getting longer and that spring is on it's way!
